Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Foo Fighters

Last week's premiere of Survivor South Pacific looked like it was the start of a pretty good season (about time!), and this Sunday marks the beginning of the next season of The Amazing Race, which looks pretty solid as well. For those of you who are regular readers of my recaps, and who are expecting them at the usual time on Wednesdays and Sundays, respectively, I wanted to make a quick post to let you know that this week's recaps will be slightly later than normal.

Instead of the usual post within 30 minutes of Survivor ending on Wednesday, my recap will be online by approximately 10:30 pm ET. I have a prior television commitment on Wednesday night, so I won't be able to watch Survivor until later. For the record, 'prior television commitment' doesn't mean I'm watching something else...I'm actually hosting a television program live from 7:00-8:00 (Rogers TV, channel 20 - shameless plug), and I'll be watching the show later that night. The recap will still be up, just slightly later.

For Sunday's premiere of The Amazing Race, I will not actually be able to watch the show on Sunday night since I will be at a concert. So, instead of a late recap on Sunday night, unfortunately you'll have to wait until Monday night. While you are watching Ethan and Jenna and all the other new racers fighting for flight spots, I'll be seeing the Foo Fighters in Buffalo.

I also saw the Foo Fighters last night in Detroit (yes, I'm a pretty big fan), and for those of you out there who are fans as well, check out the two videos embedded below. They are both taken from last night's concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills, right beside the ramp, and the quality is pretty unbelievable. I didn't shoot the videos, but I was about 30 feet from where they were taken.

So, to summarize: 1) Survivor Recap will be an hour late on Wednesday, 2) Amazing Race Recap will be a day late on Monday, and 3) Foo Fighters rock!

Falling Down...Foo Fighters-Style

To commemorate the fact that this week I received all 3 sets of Foo Fighters tickets for concerts this summer (Toronto, Buffalo, and Detroit), here is the hilarious video for the new Foos single, "Walk", just released today.

Foo Fighters: White Limo

New Single. New Video. Old School Heavy Foos.
Yes...that's Lemmy from Motorhead.

When the new Foo Fighters video is released, it is perhaps the most expected post in the history of my blog.

October 4, 2009

Every once in a while, the musical selection on Sunday is going to come full circle to the Foo Fighters again, and this week you get what is perhaps my favorite clip of all-time, along with a story.
In the spring of 2007, I got to see The Foo Fighters twice in concert in the span of 3 days. The second concert was at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, and I was there with my friend, Jenn. We had heard rumblings in the seats prior to the show about a rumoured 'huge' group that was going to join the Foo Fighters on stage, so we were all trying to figure out who it could be.

The Foo Fighters have a tendency to bring out some of their favourite bands to perform a song with them. Less than a year earlier, when they performed in London, they brought out Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen, who are arguably my favourite band of all-time aside from the Foo Fighters. I nearly passed out when I heard that...what an amazing concert to have been at. And then, on top of that, they performed my favourite Queen song, '39. If you want to see the clip, here's a link.
So we were all wondering who it would be tonight, and the guesses that were floating around were essentially all Canadian, although some other big names were guessed as well. I told Jenn, "I don't care who it is...as long as it's not Rush. Anyone but Rush." For those of you that don't know, I'm a Rush hater...to the point that I have to change the station if it comes on. Poison for my ears.

So at the beginning of the show, Dave Grohl confirms that something big is going to happen later. Then, partway through the show, which is fantastic, Taylor Hawkins starts this massive drum solo, which I had seen 2 nights prior in London, but from our vantage point, I can see people buzzing around at the side of the stage getting people ready to come out. And then I see a silhouette of the tell-tale "McDonald's-Grimace-Like" hair of Geddy Lee, and I say to Jenn, "It's Rush." She goes "What?", and I point at the side of the stage and say "It's Fucking Rush!"...just as he and Alex Lifeson walk out on to the stage and the place goes nuts. I actually sat down while everyone stood while they performed YYZ. I mean, it's bad enought that they were there, but Neil Peart is the only tolerable part of Rush, and he wasn't even there. Well, at least they did an acoustic song and I didn't have to hear Geddy Lee's cat-screech voice.

So, if you think the clip I'm about to show you is the Foo Fighters and Rush, then you obviously don't know me too well. Here's the kicker of the story, when the Foo Fighters went to London a couple of months later to perform, they once again brought out someone to perform. Except in London, it was Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. AND they performed Rock and Roll and Ramble On. So, let me get this straight? I get Rush, and they get Led Zeppelin?????? Sometimes the world just isn't fair.

So today's video is a clip of Dave and Taylor introducing Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (be warned...significant profanity), and then the performance of Rock and Roll, which featured Dave on the drums again. There's a great shot of all four of them right before the song starts and Dave looks like a little kid pounding the drums for the opening of the song.

Wednesday was scheduled to be this week's cover version musical selection, but the new Foo Fighters single, Wheels, was released literally 10 minutes ago, so that obviously takes precedence.

September 16, 2009

- I’m very happy that Jordan won Big Brother, but I’m not going to devote an entire post to it. To be fair, she really didn’t do much in the game, but she won at the final HoH when it mattered the most, and made the right decision on who to take to the final. I’m kind of bummed that Natalie won second place, and the $50,000 prize, but it’s better than her winning the half-million. I didn’t like the format of the finale, with the jumbled mess of everything that they had to do…it just looked like everyone was confused at all times. The pre-planned jury questions were ridiculous, and it changed the show that they weren’t able to speak freely as they questioned the final two, as they had been able to do in previous years. I wanted Natalie to have to deal with the fact that her “allies” couldn’t stand her anymore. Oh well, Congratulations Jordan…it’s tough to be upset about a feel-good story winning the grand prize.
- It’s been one month since I’ve had a Coke now. To be fair, I have had a Coke Froster from Mac’s after Lucas and I went for a nice long walk the other night…but I don’t think it counts.

- I’m already wearing out my new Jet album. Now the new Muse album came out yesterday—and it’s great!—and a new Weezer album next month, and the Foo Fighters Greatest Hits in November. Throw in the movie release of Where the Wild Things are next month (it’s only one month away!), and it’s shaping up to be an exciting fall. If you haven’t seen the amazing trailer for Where The Wild Things Are, check out my March 30th post. And how awesome is the cover of the new Weezer album?
- I was flipping around on TV the other day, and I came across Criss Angel’s show. I’m sorry, I’ve seen it before, and it’s just all so ridiculous. If you’re watching this show and actually believing that these ‘illusions’ are taking place in front of real people, I’m afraid I have very little hope for you. There is no way that these idiotic tricks are done without camera trickery and editing, and there is about a one hundred percent chance that anyone who is participating in ‘the trick’ or is one of the spectators…are all paid actors. It is absolutely idiotic to think anything otherwise. This is why this moron doesn’t do a live show, because he can’t do his “illusions” without the camera or the paid responses. And don’t even try to tell me that his show in Las Vegas, Believe, qualifies…because even though he stars in it, he doesn’t do magic! It’s all theatrics with Cirque Du Soleil. And do you know why he doesn’t do live magic? Because he can’t!

- I’ve mentioned a number of times on the blog here, how I love Swiss Chalet. Let’s be honest…who in their right mind doesn’t? I had dinner the other night at Swiss Chalet with my friend Norm, and when he plopped a giant pile of ketchup on his plate for his fries, I asked why he would choose ketchup over the always-delightful Chalet sauce. Norm proceeds to tell me that he likes them mixed together…so much so that he sometimes POURS THE KETCHUP IN THE CHALET SAUCE. (I’ll pause for you to get past the involuntary gagging and partial vomiting that most of you are experiencing right now.) Now, I have to ask, why on earth would you mix these 2 things together? I actually asked him later in the week, and his response was “I really enjoy the ketchup and chalet sauce as it swirls together forming a heavenly blend of two great tastes.” Yes…he actually said that. First of all, you can’t group ketchup and Chalet Sauce together as both being ‘great tastes’…you just can’t. Second of all…never mind…I can’t even talk about this anymore, it’s just so disgusting.

Just a few more Random Thoughts...

- I was reading a story yesterday that I found astounding. The internet service in parts of Africa is so slow that they ran a test to see what would be faster, an electronic transfer of data, or a data card strapped to a carrier pigeon. The pigeon won. Click here to check out the story.
- Look what album is being released on November 3rd. I'm quite excited to say the least. Greatest Hits plus 2 new tracks! And a limited edition 2-disc set.
- Less than a week of Big Brother left. If Natalie doesn't get evicted on tonight's episode, I'm going to be furious.
- We got this album through work this week, another in a long line of lullaby albums featuring the music of pop or rock artists. But let's be honest...is this really the best name for this album?
- The season premiere of Saturday Night Live is coming up on September 26th, and the host is Megan Fox, with U2 as the musical guest. Should be good, and gives me an excuse to post this picture of Megan Fox.

- I'll leave you with two great quotes that I read this week:

1) Poker is a game of skill until the poker gods shit on you.

2) A Friend with Benefits is like a unicorn that craps cupcakes. Fun to imagine, but not real.

July 19, 2009

Sundays are now going to be the day where I feature a song each week. It could be one of my favourites, something I'm just listening to that week, something funny, something retro, or just something for no reason. Check back on Sundays.

This week it's a live performance of one of my favourite Foo Fighters songs, Tired of You. I can't decide what's better about this clip: a) that Dave Grohl looks 12 years old, b) that he gives props to Queen's Brian May for the guitar on the album version, or c) that this performance blows my mind.

Enjoy.

It was 15 years ago today that Kurt Cobain's body was found.
(not the day he died, but the day he was found.)

Let's all take a moment and thank the world for the Foo Fighters

As promised, here is a clip from the Toronto show last year, with Dave Grohl telling a story about Iggy Pop.

March 20, 2009

- It's NCAA Tournament time and I'm loving it. Too bad that Duke didn't get seeded in Philadelphia or Dayton, or I would have made the trip to see the first two rounds, but if they make it to the Final Four in Detroit, I think I'm going to have to fork out some pretty serious cash, because there is NO way I'm going to miss that. I'm 14-2 after Day One in my bracket pool, and if VCU hits that shot at the buzzer vs. UCLA, I would have been 15-1. It was very deja vu watching VCU's Erick Maynor with a shot in the closing seconds to upset a higher seed in the first round. Why couldn't he have missed that shot 2 years ago against Duke in Buffalo?
- Last week at this time, I had the opportunity to see the Foo Fighters twice in one week. See the post below for a clip from one of the shows, and there will be another one on Saturday. My friend Phil just made me a great T-Shirt that reads "Kurt Plus Shotgun Equals Foo Fighters." Love it!
- Lucas has been enjoying his March Break Hockey Camp, but the little man has been axhausted at the end of the day.
- We went to the OUA Women's Hockey Championship last weekend, and it was so much fun. The game was fantastic, and Lucas won Chuck-A-Puck at the intermission when his puck was the closest to centre ice. He won a really nice Wilson bag and planner, which he has been taking to Camp all week.
- Another win at WNP this week....running good right now in the tournaments. Let's hope it keeps up until the WSOP in June.
- Impressive to see Carleton win another CIS championship. I'll look back on this past 7 years as a pretty historic run when I'm older. Lucas and I watched some games on the weekend, and while we were watching Ottawa vs. Western, the announcer kept referring to Ottawa as the Gee Gees (which is their team name, of course), but at one point, Lucas turned to me and said, "Dad, the Kijiji's need to make a big comeback if they're going to win." Too funny!
- Final thoughts will be on this week's episode of Lost, so on that note:

JENN STOP READING

- I enoyed this episode, even if the overall perception of it was that it is a gap-bridger to set up the end of the season. I liked how they blended things together to get everybody on track. I was a tad disappointed that the baby 'only' ended up being Ethan, but it was weird to see Juliet delivering the man who recruited her to the Island. Sun cracking Ben on the head with the oar was great. And how awesome was Frank, landing that plane on Hydra Island...on the runway that Kate and Sawyer were helping to build in Season 3. More proof that Damon and Carlton knew all along what they were doing. I have to say, the scene with Christian Shephard was majorly creepy. And there's a screencap out there that shows a figure behind Sun when he's talking to her, that looks like it might be a blond woman. Could it be Claire? Take a look here and see what you think.

March 20, 2009

One year ago, I got to see the Foo Fighters twice in three days. They were two of the best concerts I've ever seen. I thought I would post a clip from that first show, one year ago today, from London at the John Labatt Centre. This is a clip from the encore with Dave Grohl telling the history of the song 'Big Me' and Mentos candies. This clip contains an incredibly excessive amount of profanity (along with a fantastic Rivers Cuomo impression) so it is most definitely NSFW.

I'll post another clip from the Toronto show in a couple of days, but it definitely not be when the brought Rush out on stage and performed with them. I'm still furious...

February 10, 2009

- Ok, I'm pretty much done with Heroes. I'm just not into this new Fugitives arc. The characters are acting out of character, and frankly, just stupid. The writing is horrible, everybody over-acts, and I realized I don't really care what happens to any of them.
- Lucas and I have been watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy the last couple of nights. I figured he was old enough to deal with some of the scary parts, and he's been fine. We're halfway through the second one, and he is just LOVING them.
- I was flipping around the Grammys the other night and saw Kate Beckinsale come out to introduce someone, so since I'm kind of in love with her, I stuck around to see who it was, and lo and behold...it was Paul McCartney (yawn)...performing with Dave Grohl! (Woo-hoo!) Speaking of Dave Grohl, for anyone who didn't click the SNL video I put up 2 days ago on my last post, I would highly recommend you watch it, Dave makes an appearance around the 1:00 mark.
- I had a craving for wonton soup the other night, so instead of heading out to buy some, I made my own broth and homemade wontons....soooo good.
- I'm really enjoying the new season of Scrubs. The music has been fantastic, as it always has been, the closing songs are always perfect to fit the mood and tone of the episode. Ted's new girlfriend, The Gooch, is great (not to be confused with The Gooch, the bully from Diff'rent Strokes), and Jimmy The Overly Touch Orderly makes me laugh every time he shows up.
- HPA didn't go exactly as planned the other night, but I still came 6th. And I'm back in first place overall with only 3 events left. However, I'm only a half point ahead of Tony, and only 3 points ahead of Steve (588.5, 588.0, and 585.5). Gonna be a tight race coming down to these last 3 months. Congratulations to Tony on a very impressive win.
- We're hosting a charity poker tournament next Thursday the 19th with the proceeds going to support the Waterloo Arts Festival. There are some great prizes, so anyone who is interested in playing, send me an email and I can send you details and register you.
- Duke vs. UNC tomorrow night, and I'm going to be out. I can't even tape it since I have to tape Lost. (Not sure if you noticed, I'm a bit of a Lost junkie.) Those of you who know me well, know that there isn't much that I would miss taping a Duke-UNC game for...but I guess Lost is on that list.
- Here's a funny link for you. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it is a compilation of EVERY curse word from the entire six-season run of The Sopranos, in chronological orders. Warning, it is 27 minutes long, and most definitely NSFW. (duh!). Check it out here.

February 8, 2009

This is from last year, but still ridiculously funny.

February 5, 2009

- One thing I remembered from January that I hadn't mentioned yet was the Baseball Hall of Fame elections. Rickey Henderson was clearly a no-brainer (get your head around that statement!), but I'm thrilled that Jim Rice finally got into the Hall of Fame. It is truly well deserved, he should have been voted in a long time ago.
- For those of you who guessed at the Concert trivia question, there were some good guesses, some bad guesses, and some downright insulting guesses (Bel Biv Devoe...really?), but here are your answers: Duran Duran (obvious, since that's what spawned the question), Foo Fighters (very easy, a number of you got this one), Sarah McLachlan (6 times), and Live (4 times). Thanks for playing along.
- Last night was my return to the WNP game after 3 weeks off since I was announcing basketball games. 21 players and 5 rebuys, it was a big game. With 9 players left, I was above average stack with no takeouts yet, but then I busted all 8 of the other players to win and notch 8 takeouts. It was a nice win after 3 weeks off. Dennis and I went heads up at the end, and since he beat me last time we were heads up, now we're 50/50.

JENN - STOP READING

- I didn't enjoy Lost last night as much as the first 3 episodes, but on it's own it was probably pretty good. It's just that after 3 mind-blowing episodes...well, it's a pretty tough act to follow. I wasn't that shocked by the reveal that Jin is still alive, but it will be interesting to see what effect his interaction with Rousseau's crew in 1988 will have.
- The links are active now on the sidebar on the left for those of you that want to check out the recaps. Also, check out http://darkufo.blogspot.com as well. There is a contributor named Vozzek69 that always writes some great recaps as well. Today he had a great theory on the whispers/apparitions on the Island.

JENN - YOU CAN CONTINUE READING NOW

- I'm excited for a new season of Hell's Kitchen. The premiere was pretty good.
- Waterloo vs. Guelph this weekend at Guelph. Should be interesting with all the Waterloo regulars at the game and me announcing for Guelph now.
- I recently discovered the show Chef School on Food Network and I highly recommend it. It's about students training at the Stratford Chef School.
- I watched The Wrestler the other night on DVD (sssh...don't tell anyone) and I really enjoyed it. Mickey Rourke was great, and I have a newfound appreciation for Marisa Tomei. Seriously, anyone who has seen it, can you believe she's 45 years old?!
